Montgomery Parks’ Archaeology Program identifies, manages, and interprets archaeological sites on parkland and considers the effects of land use decisions on cultural resources. Research and excavations contribute to interpretation, public education programs, restorations, and park development plans.
The program provides for the stewardship of non-renewable archaeological resources and an opportunity for public participation in discovering our past right in your backyard. Learn more below.

Archaeology Leadership Training Workshop and Camp Assistant Program Package, Age 14+
Want to become an awesome camp counselor and get hands-on experience while earning SSL Hours? Sign up for this two-week (9 day) workshop! The first week you will learn the basics in archaeological methods, get CPR Training and create and plan camp activities. The second week you will dig into the real thing! You’ll work with the Park Archaeologists to hone your leadership and management skills. Archaeology Camp for Children, Ages 9 – 13
Find out what it takes to be an archaeologist! Here’s your chance to work alongside the Parks’ archaeologist and get hands on experience with mapping, soil identification, and artifact processing. Each week we’ll take a field trip to a different historic site, and weather permitting, do some real excavating! Camp fulfills some requirements for the Boy Scout Archaeology Merit Badge. Archaeology Detectives, Ages 6 – 8
Find out what it takes to be an archaeologist! Uncover the past as you look for clues past peoples left behind! Campers will discover how archaeologists piece together the evidence from the past as they investigate the landscape around them; campers will get hands-on experience learning about excavation and artifact identification.
